The Downtown Business Professional Group’s 2018 First Coast Leadership Awards Dinner was held on Friday, June 1, at the Lexington Hotel and honored First Coast Business Leaders & CEO’s. Master of Ceremony was meteorologist Steve Smith, formerly of First Coast News.
Wayne Hogan was recognized in the Community Leader category for his efforts against the dangers of distracted driving. Distracted driving is a national epidemic, and Wayne recently spoke to the Downtown Business Professional Group sharing his For the Workforce presentation on the risks of distracted driving, strategies to combat it, and legal liabilities and other serious consequences: civil liability for personal injury or wrongful death, criminal charges, property damage, loss of a license, insurance rate hikes, fines and productivity loss. The presentation addresses implementing policies protecting against cell phone use while driving on company business. Recipient Bill Thompson’s acceptance stressed a philosophy learned from his father: “When you have something take care of it,” referring to the secret for having a successful business. In accepting the award, Wayne adopted Thompson’s theme, saying to the leaders in the audience, “One text or call can wreck it all.”
Ten business, professional and public service leaders were recognized during the evening, including – to a standing ovation – President Nat Glover of Edward Waters College. Other award recipients were bestselling author Brenda Jackson, business leaders, Bill Thompson (Burger King), Jillian Hubbard (Advanced Furniture Solutions) and Dana Stallings (Kilwins and Jax Kitchen), Clara White Mission CEO, Ju’Coby Pittman, Dr. David Heekin (Heekin Orthopedic Clinic), entrepreneur Casey Kelley (Blended Designs), and Nancy Quinones of the Puerto Rico/Hispanic Chamber.
