Juries continue to be convinced that Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder is contaminated with asbestos and is responsible for causing mesothelioma, a rare cancer exclusively caused by asbestos, and ovarian cancer. The most recent verdict was March 13, 2019 where a California jury awarded 29.5 million to a mesothelioma victim and found Johnson & Johnson’s talcum-based baby powder contaminated with asbestos and caused the mesothelioma.

Johnson & Johnson’s denials and lack of concern for public safety prompted Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass), a member of the US Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, to query the FDA to investigate allegations that Johnson and Johnson has known for decades that its talc products were contaminated with asbestos but kept this information from regulators and the public. The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act does not require cosmetic products and ingredients to have FDA approval before entering the market. The agency has been asked to investigate using its full force of its regulatory and investigatory authority to protect public health, especially since J&J’s baby powder is such an iconic product.  J&J is facing more than 10,000 lawsuits alleging its talcum powder products caused cancer.
