How Many People Are Killed By Medical Errors? The Answer is Shocking

Empty Bed Gurney in Hospital Corridor

Several months ago, Malaysia Airlines flight 370 went missing with 239 passengers and crew. Twenty-five countries provided 12 aircraft, 14 ships, a robotic submarine, and spy satellite imaging in a futile search and rescue effort.  Last week the Journal of Patient Safety published research suggesting that 440,000 people die in United States hospitals annually as a result of medical errors.  That figure equates to more than 1,200 people needlessly dying in our country’s hospitals every single day – 5 times more than the death toll of Flight 370.  And yet, this most recent study has barely been noticed by the national press.
Our medical malpractice attorneys have also noticed an increase in the number of wrongful deaths and catastrophic injuries caused by medication errors, medical malpractice and nursing negligence.  The families of those hurt by such errors always want to know what, if anything, could have been done to prevent the outcome.  Here is a link to a Consumer Reports article which discusses how to Survive Your Hospital Stay.
440,000 patients is equivalent to almost the entire population of Atlanta, Georgia. Preventable medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States and cost our country tens of billions of dollars a year.  Take Justice Back  is devoting the month of May to raising public awareness of the patient safety epidemic plaguing our country.
Despite this serious epidemic, corporate front groups are working hard in the U.S. Congress and state legislatures throughout the country to limit accountability and access to the civil justice system when patients are harmed or killed by medical errors.
At Terrell • Hogan, we represent the injured as they seek justice.  We want to help make sure that if you or your loved ones have been injured by medical malpractice, those responsible will be held accountable.
