Consumers Can Fight Back Against Unwanted Sales Calls

$700 Million Equifax Settlement: How Does It Affect Me?

Perhaps you have noticed an increase in unwanted calls attempting to sell you something or a service. Have you registered your phone number with the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) the National Do Not Call Registry? It is free and registers both home phone and cell phone numbers. It is not perfect, and may not stop all nuisance calls because some companies and individuals violate the law and it only prohibits sales calls, but it is certainly a help.

How to Register

The easiest way is to call from your phone you wish to register, 1-888-382-1222. You can also register your phone online at donotcall, gov, but it requires an extra step. Your phone number should show up on the National Do Not Call Registry the next day. Most sales calls will stop once your number has been on the Registry for 31 days You can also verify if you are already registered and when that registration was at his same number and website.

Robocalls

Consumers are getting more and more unsolicited robocalls. What is a robocall? If you answer your phone and hear a recorded message instead of a live person, that is a robocall. If the recording is a sales message and you haven’t given your written permission to get calls from that company, the call is illegal. In addition to the phone call being illegal, the pitch is most likely a scam. Companies are using autodialers to send out thousands of calls a minute at an incredibly low cost and are not first screening telephone numbers to see if they are on the Do Not Call Registry. If a company does not care about obeying the law, the likelihood that it is a scam is greatly increased.

Helpful Hints

If you receive an illegal sales call or robocall, first hang up, do not interact in any way, and then report it to the FTC. Important to now is that pressing buttons to be taken off the call list or to talk to a live person, will probably lead to more unwanted calls. File a complaint with the FTC. Those who violate the National Do Not Call Registry or place an illegal robocall can be fined up to $41,484 per call.

If you live in Florida, you should also register your phone number on the Florida Do Not Call List  online at the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Also file a complaint for illegal sales call or robocalls you receive.
