Allergan announced a worldwide recall of its Biocell textured breast implants and tissue expanders that are linked to a rare form of cancer, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, according to NPR.
The U.S Food & Drug Administration requested the recall following new information showing Allergan’s Biocell breast implants comprised a disproportionate share of the rare lymphoma cases. The recall comes after regulators imposed similar bans in France, Australia and Canada. Biocell saline–filled and silicone-filled textured implants and tissue expanders will no longer be sold.
The implants, which have a textured surface, as opposed to smooth, were designed to help the implants stay in place and minimize rippling and scar tissue. Researchers believe texturing may cause inflammation that leads to the cancer.
In 2017, the FDA found nine women died from anaplastic large cell lymphoma caused by their textured implants, according to a New York Times article.
